IRATA Level 3 Rope Access Supervisor — the highest IRATA certification. Full site supervision, complex rigging design, SSoW development, and rescue leadership.
Objectives
IRATA Level 3 is the highest technician certification within the IRATA framework. It qualifies an individual to take full operational responsibility for rope access operations: supervising teams, designing complex rigging systems, developing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), and leading advanced rescue procedures. A Level 3 supervisor must be present on site for all IRATA rope access operations.
Target Audience
Certified IRATA Level 2 technicians with at least 12 months of experience and 1,000 logged working hours who are seeking to become qualified supervisors with full site-level responsibility.
General Requirements
- Minimum Age: All candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.
- Maximum Intake per Course (MBTC): Mega Brahma Training Centre accommodates a maximum of 10 candidates per course.
- Medical Fitness: Candidates must be physically fit and medically suitable for work at height.
- Attitude & Fitness: Rope access work requires a professional attitude, sound judgement, and appropriate physical capability.
- Identity Verification: Candidates must be registered and verified on IRATA TechConnect where applicable.
- Course Duration: Training is delivered over 4–5 days with a minimum of 30 contact hours, followed by a 1-day assessment.
- Certification Validity: IRATA certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of assessment.
- Logbook: The IRATA logbook must be maintained and presented for upgrade or revalidation.
Prerequisites
- Hold a valid IRATA Level 2 certificate (valid on the day of assessment).
- Minimum of 12 months of experience as a certified IRATA Level 2 technician.
- Minimum of 1,000 working hours logged and verified in the IRATA logbook at Level 2.
- Medical fitness to work at height.
- Competence in all practical and theoretical requirements of Level 2.
- A current and valid First Aid certificate is strongly recommended and may be required for supervisory roles.
Course Content & Syllabus
- Introduction to the IRATA ICOP and the full roles and responsibilities of a Level 3 supervisor.
- Equipment identification, function, inspection intervals, and retirement criteria for all rope access equipment.
- Advanced rope access techniques: seamless changeovers under load, tensioned lines, horizontal systems, and complex system modifications.
- Designing and rigging complex systems: horizontal anchor systems, multi-point load-sharing anchors, haul and lower systems with mechanical advantage, and advanced retrievable rigging.
- Leading and executing advanced rope access rescue operations and emergency recovery.
- Developing and enforcing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW): method statements, risk assessments (RAMS), rescue plans, toolbox talks, and team briefings.
- Supervisory skills: monitoring Level 1 and Level 2 technicians, ensuring site compliance, reporting non-conformances, and client-facing documentation.
- Advanced hazard identification and control: redundancy, fall-factor minimisation, edge management, and anchor design.
- Theory: IRATA TACS, ICOP, UK and international legislation, system design awareness, and supervisory responsibility.
Course Duration & Assessment
- Training Duration: 4–5 days (minimum 30 hours of contact training).
- Assessment Day: 1 day with an independent IRATA International Assessor.
- Total Duration: 5–6 days.
- Assessment Format: Practical assessment of advanced rope manoeuvres, complex rigging systems, rescue leadership, and SSoW implementation, plus theory assessment covering TACS, ICOP, legislation, system design, and supervisory responsibilities.
- Re-sit Policy: Candidates who fail the assessment have 60 days from the date of the failed assessment to re-sit before being required to retake the full training course.
Certification & Expiry
- Certificate Validity: 3 years from the date of assessment.
- Upon Certification: Successful candidates receive an updated IRATA certificate of competence and ID card.
- RASS Eligibility: Level 3 supervisors may be eligible to apply for IRATA Rope Access Safety Supervisor (RASS) status, subject to additional requirements.
- Revalidation: Must be completed before the 3-year expiry date through refresher training and reassessment at an IRATA-approved centre.
