IRATA Level 1 — Rope Access Technician
IRATA Level 1 is the entry-level qualification in the IRATA International rope access system. It confirms that a technician can use rope access equipment correctly, carry out standard manoeuvres safely, and work under supervision within a pre-planned system.
- Entry-level certification with no previous rope access experience required.
- Training delivered in accordance with the IRATA Training, Assessment and Certification Scheme (TACS) and IRATA ICOP.
- Technicians work under the supervision of an IRATA Level 3 supervisor.
- Total course duration: 5 days including independent assessment.

Course Content
- Introduction to IRATA ICOP and technician roles.
- Equipment identification, inspection, and care.
- Knots and terminations.
- Rope access techniques: ascending, descending, changeovers, deviations, and re-anchors.
- Simple rigging tasks and work positioning.
- Basic rescue awareness and risk awareness.
- Theory: legislation, safety principles, and equipment standards.
Course Duration & Assessment
- Training: 4 days (minimum 30 hours).
- Assessment: 1 day with an independent IRATA International Assessor.
- Total duration: 5 days.
- Re-sit allowed within 60 days if the assessment is failed.
Certification
- Certificate validity: 3 years from the date of assessment.
- Upon certification: IRATA certificate of competence, photo ID card, and IRATA logbook.
- Progression to Level 2 after 12 months and 1,000 logged hours at Level 1.
